Oct 06 2008: Watch With Kristin: Heroes Redux

WHAT LIES AHEAD

* Next week is a huge episode for Nathan Petrelli. We'll learn more about his ability, and he'll be taking Tracy home to meet mom. (You can only imagine how well that goes…) He also sets off a mission that leads him to discover the shocking secret of another Hero.
* Claire learns what her father is capable of when it comes to serving the Company, and she ain't the least bit happy about it. But on the flip side, during the same mission where Claire sees her father at his worst, Claire and her uncle Sylar bond. Crazy, I know, since Sylar was cutting off the top of Claire's skull just a few weeks ago, but oddly, the two of them do find a little common ground next week, while fighting a guy I'll call the Vortex Villain.
* As the previews promised, Arthur Petrelli finally appears next week, and he's been conspiring with another Hero's father…

Oct 06 2008: Watch With Kristin: Heroes Spoiler Chat

Miranda in Auckland, N.Z.: Any Heroes goodies, especially about the Petrellis or the Bennets?
Claire and HRG are headed for a showdown of sorts. As Jack Coleman told me: "Around episode five, Claire and Noah collide in a most unexpected and kind of horrific way—I don't mean horrific...I just mean as a father, let's just say she just turns up in a place where I'd least like her to turn up when I'm doing work that I don't want her to know about." I'll tell you more about this disastrous collision in the "What's to Come" section of tonight's Heroes Redux.

P.J. in Chicago: Hey there baby mama! Wondering if you could bear to part with some Nathan or Peter Petrelli scoop?
How about Nathan scoop? Have I told you already that Nathan gets his head sliced open this season? No? OK then: This season on Heroes, Nathan gets his head sliced open, Sylar-can-opener-style. Whaaat?!

Oct 06 2008: Heroes: Are Hiro and Ando Going Bad?

"It's a very eco-friendly gas solution!" says Masi. I'm pretty sure he was joking when he said the formula was going to help my gas tank, but still, at least he's green.

Zap! Bang! Power! OK, so, what was going on in the premiere episode when Ando killed Hiro in the future? Says James, "If I zapped him, it's probably for a good reason. But we don't know if he's turned bad, or if I've turned bad, or if he's betrayed me." Is there a significance to Future Ando's power of red lightning? Well, says Masi, "if you think of anybody with lightning bolts, they're going to be evil. We see Elle as a villain, and we see future Ando shoot lightning bolts." Eek.

Say It Ain't So, Hiro: I never thought it would be possible, but Masi Oka says Hiro Nakamura could one day become evil: "I don't know if it will happen, I don't know if it has happened, but I do think it needs to go there eventually." Aaah!

BFF? Red lightning aside, can Hiro and Ando's friendship make it through what's to come? Says James Kyson Lee, "These two characters have always been good, loyal friends, but in this show, you can never try to predict what happens, because once you think you know, you don't."

May the Force Be With You: As of tonight's episode, Hiro and Ando are currently stuck on Level Five, and I hear the Haitian is going to addle Hiro's brain a little. According to James Kyson Lee, "Hiro thinks he's 10—that's the last age he remembers. So now I'm trying to save the world and babysit at the same time. I try to get him to remember how he used to use his powers, so there's a little bit of 'Yoda trying to get Luke get his memory back.' " So Ando is the new Yoda? "[More like] Ando-wan-kenobi." And according to Masi Oka, there is another bonus to this situation: "It's a good reason to be able to say 'Yatta!' again without feeling silly." Yatta! Er, yay!

Power Up? According to James Kyson Lee, there are many paths to abilities: "We learn this season that in order for people to obtain abilities, there has to be a combination of factors—both physical and environmental elements. We think the eclipse might have to do with it. Maybe the formula we are trying to find is closely linked to it, and of course Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy) is trying to do experiments to find out, but he's not finding the answers either." Does it involve midichlorians? Maybe something about fear, anger, hate, suffering and the Dark Side?

Oct 06 2008: Jack Coleman's BuddyTV Interview Part 1

What was it like coming back after the strike and going into this new partnership with Sylar?

We were gone for so long it just seemed like forever, so when we came back it took a couple days to get the wheels working and the joints oiled. It was laid on me pretty early that HRG was going to be in partnership with somebody very different, and at first I thought it was going to be Claire. When it turned out to be Sylar I thought that was very cool. I was a little concerned about the transition from mortal enemies to cooperating on a mission together. That worried me a little bit to start out that way, but I think the fact that they have the two of us kind of scheming against each other even as we work together, I think that works well.

I think that's something the fans have been a little concerned with. Sylar is this serial killer villain from the first two seasons, and now he's just out and about. There's been a little explanation for why that's acceptable, but it's a bit of a leap. I'm wondering if you can talk about rationalizing letting Sylar out like that.

It is a big leap. I think the only way it works is if the audience can believe he is redeemable, or at least that there's a desire in him to be something other than a serial killer, I think through the idea that maybe he's found his family, or maybe he's found some sort of purpose. On the other hand, you see the first time he's out and about that it doesn't go so well. While he's very effective, he also happens to be overtaken by his hunger. I think it is a lot to ask of the audience to believe these mortal enemies are going to be cooperating with each other, but I also think as it goes on you see that they're really not cooperating with each other. The way I justify it for HRG is that Angela said he's going out there anyway, so it's your call whether or not it's under your tutelage. I think HRG has a big enough ego that he figures if anyone's going to be dealing with him it's going to be me. The old adage of keep your friends close and your enemies closer. That's how I justify it for my character, that the idea of him being out there is out of my hands, so I'm just going to keep it under my jurisdiction.

What is it like working with Zachary Quinto? This season there are a lot of changes and people acting with new people, and you really haven't had that many scenes with him before this year.

Actually, we started out together to a certain extent. Some of his big early scenes were with me in captivity, and the Noah Bennett-Sylar relationship was one of the first in season 1, if you go back to the stuff around "Homecoming" when he gets captured, then he gets out and comes to the Bennett house. We started out working together quite a bit, but then toward the end of season 1 and most of season 2 we didn't work together. So we're kind of back to our roots to a certain extent, and you'll see as the season goes on that this relationship is very complicated and ultimately not a happy one.

In the last episode we learned that HRG is the one who put the villains in the Level 5 prison. Are we going to see more of that back story with HRG's relationship to these villains?

You see a little of it. There's not all that much. What you will see more of is in a great episode, it's episode eight, and it's a flashback episode that's kind of a prequel to the pilot. It sort of dovetails into the pilot, and you see how, for instance, HRG and Elle are complicit in sort of the creation of Sylar. It's a really good origins episode of how Sylar got to be the way he is, and the relationship between HRG and Elle. It was hinted at last year when Suresh says to me, "You know her?" and it's like, "Oh yeah." It's never really explained in what form, how it is that I knew her, so you really see more of that. In that episode you will also see Knox and see where he came from, so you do see the villains there. But there's not a tremendous amount of HRG and the villains back story.
